Monyhull Church began life in 1988 when a group of Christians living in the south of Birmingham decided to meet together for fellowship in one of their homes. They shared a conviction that the focus of church life ought to be the systematic preaching and teaching of the Bible, and had been travelling considerable distances to find such ministry. Word spread that this gathering was taking place, and on the first Sunday over 30 people attended! It soon became obvious that there was a need in this part of the city for the kind of ministry that had brought the original group together, and a decision was made to continue these meetings on a regular basis.

church ctIn the summer of 1989 the church was formally constituted as South Birmingham Evangelical Church and a membership was formed. Premises were acquired at what was then the Women's Hospital in Sparkhill, and regular Sunday services continued there until 1995. When that hospital closed, the services were moved to Swanshurst Girls School in Kings Heath in the morning, and to Monyhull Hospital Chapel in Kings Norton in the evening. At Easter 2000 the morning service was moved to Monyhull also, and now most of the activities take place on this site. In 2004 we took the decision to formally identify with the new location, and re-named to Monyhull Church.

The congregation today numbers about 200, and we are thankful to God for his goodness to us so far. We have been able to sustain the vision of a church committed to the preaching and teaching of the Bible, but have also developed our interest in other ways - particularly in mission and evangelism. We continue to see people come to faith in Jesus and baptismal services have become a regular part of our calendar. In 1995 we appointed our first pastor, Colin Tamplin and he continues to lead the work to this day. In 2006 he was joined by an associate, John Tindall, who, with his wife Pauline, moved to Birmingham in July 2006.

At present we are in the process of taking a very significant step forward. The premises we currently use are now at the heart of a new 600 home housing estate that has beenbuilt on the former hospital site. An agreement has been reached with the Local Authority whereby in return for the hand over of the building and necessary land we will develop a combined church and community facility for the new estate. Our aim is to completely refurbish the current church building as well as adding a significant annexe with relevant amenities. We are now in the process of seeking planning permission for the extension, and then we will begin the necessary fund raising.
