History of Monyhull Church
Monyhull Church began life in 1989 when a group of Christians living in the south of Birmingham decided to meet together for fellowship in one of their homes. They shared a conviction that the focus of church life ought to be the systematic preaching and teaching of the Bible, and had been travelling considerable distances to find such ministry. Word spread that this gathering was taking place and on the first Sunday over 30 people attended. It soon became obvious that there was a need in this part of the City for the kind of ministry that had brought the original group together and so the church was formed!
In the summer of 1989, the church was formally constituted as South Birmingham Evangelical Church. Premises were acquired at what was then the Women’s Hospital in Sparkhill and regular Sunday services continued there until 1995.
When that hospital closed, the services were moved to Swanshurst Girls School in Kings Heath in the morning and to Monyhull Hospital Chapel in Kings Norton in the evening. In March 2000, the morning service was moved to Monyhull as well. Four years later, we took the decision to identify ourselves with our new location and re-named the church ‘Monyhull Church’.
In 1995 we appointed our first pastor, Colin Tamplin and he continues to lead the work to this day. In 2006 he was joined by an associate, John Tindall, who, with his wife Pauline, moved to Birmingham in July 2006. In September 2010 Paul Mallard also joined the ministry team as Associate Pastor for Training and Church Development. He shares ministry with acting as director of the Midlands Gospel Parnership.
